The harsh, therapy-inducing reality that’s going to slap the hardcore Hopeandchangeys upside their heads and shatter their thoroughly Oprahfied worlds is this: Barack Obama isn’t ever going to do anything for them because this presidency is all about him.

President Facetime is relentlessly focused on redefining narcissism and nothing else. In the latest example that his vaunted Ivy League intellect may just be a rumor, he’s decided to take a pass on going to Berlin to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the fall of communism.

Don’t worry, little Lightbringers, the Nobel ass-kissing party in Oslo is still SO on.

You see, one is about him and one isn’t.

The vapid suit that occupies the White House right now can’t stand the thought of attending in an event of truly international and historical significance because he’d be a mere participant and not the center of attention.

Can you imagine Obama’s horror over the prospect of possibly hearing Ronald Reagan’s name mentioned favorably and his mentioned only in introduction?

Surely there’s a health care town hall in Duluth that’s more pressing that day.

He probably doesn’t employ one speechwriter who could tackle a speech that required both historical perspective and an inability to blame George W. Bush for something.

Obama lives for sycophantic throngs who swoon over his every movement. Once you’ve had the brain dead faithful applaud you for blowing your nose during a campaign speech, detractors totally harsh your buzz. I’m convinced that if he spends too much time in the Oval Office without applause from a crowd he curls up into a fetal position and rocks back and forth under his desk until Rahm pops a DVD of his inauguration speech into the computer.

I’ve been having discussions with some friends on the Left about why I was so amused when President Obama got rejected in a nanosecond when he went to pimp Chicago’s Olympic bid. Humpy Leg Matthews at MSNBC and his colleagues in the Obama Advocacy Corps tried to make it seem like we on the Right were rooting against America. Not at all. We just see the folly of “Look at me!” stunts and wish this so very thoughtful president would begin to take the job a bit more seriously.

There are aspects to the presidency that are lonely and not at all self-affirming and I truly believe that this man who so many people are desperate to see as a transcendent figure shrinks away from those.

Progressives can blame Republicans in Congress for stonewalling things but the reality, as any Republican not in Congress knows, is that they’re impotent and incapable of stopping anyone.

This president hasn’t done the things his supporters hoped he would have by now because he hasn’t gotten the memo about the campaign being over. It’s that simple.

And when given an opportunity to participate in something truly historical and make all the citizens of his country proud he passes so he can rest up and take a later trip that gives him a little more quality time with the camera, which just happens to be his favorite constituent.

My friends on the Left will, of course, disagree with every word of this because they are still immune to any evidence of the extraordinary disconnect between the president’s words and actions. In five years, however, I’ll let them read this again.

They’ll still be mad at me but they won’t be arguing.
