And beyond, because he’s probably come to his Waterloo.
The RNC, which had been hemming and hawing about Doug Hoffman’s candidacy in NY-23 as late as yesterday afternoon has seen the writing on the wall. And the blogs. And, most importantly, the checks.
Hoffman has enjoyed an influx of endorsements and cash this past week that has resulted in a surge in the polls even the most oblivious GOP operatives can’t ignore any longer. Now Michael Steele has given in.
“You’ve got two Republicans running in that race. My upside is that one of them will likely win,” Steele said. “We want to be supporting the one that wins.”
There are other reports about the ever-clueless NRCC has gotten its dose of Hoffman-upside-the-head too.
So ACORN’s Republican of choice is being left to twist in the wind whilst the rest of the higher-ups have a taste of responding to their base for a change.
All of Newt Gingrich’s snow-jobbing about “respect for local party officials” and electability are now exposed for what they have been all along: the condescending posturing of an old-school party guy who doesn’t quite get how things work now.
Let’s hope that the NRCC’s initial blunder won’t ultimately ruin things for Hoffman.
And let’s see if any of them can crack a skull or two at the NRSC and get them to throw their support behind Marco Rubio.

But wouldn’t it have been a little more satisfying, and perhaps much more effective to scare the right people if there were still some people siding with Newt? The primary value of NY-23 is to scare the RINOs; now they’ve just left.
