I have to say it: airport security in the US is a joke in general. After 9/11 European airports REALLY took security seriously and my 10 yr old son (who has been travelling often since he was about 3) is convinced that taking your shoes off and having your luggage ransacked at airports is perfectly normal. As soon as we land in the US, however, it's a different story - with Eastern European passports my son and I are usually just shown straight to the exit without even going through proper Customs. ('Cause charming young mommies with cute kids can't possibly be bringing in something illegal. Right?) My Dad, also not a US citizen) is shown straight through to the boarding gates without passing metal detectors because he often wears white turtle necks with coal grey suits and they keep mistaking him for a priest! (I gather it would be extremely difficult for a terrorist to come by a padre outfit in the States??? Like, probably even more difficult than getting their hands on an explosive device.)

I, a foreigner, DON'T feel safe on US airlines and when travelling within the US will opt for a nice train (or even bus) ride, thank you very much.
